Service Quality Management - Correlating Network Performance with Service Delivery

Hugh Kelly
West Ridge Networks

The shift to IP infrastructure is inevitable as carriers seek to reduce operational cost, generate new revenues, and drive profitability. But IP networks are much more challenging than ATM core networks. So, what worked then is not necessarily the best solution now.

Furthermore, services are eroding in price and becoming increasingly more complex. Carriers are evolving from traditional routing to the need to support protocols like MPLS, and enable real-time Class of Service offerings like VoIP. Enterprise customers are demanding Service Level Agreements with measurable performance guarantees - and rightfully so. With the dynamic nature of IP networks, carriers need to be able to understand the performance of their IP network over time - and they also need visibility into how network performance is affecting service delivery. Yet, current solutions measure service performance in isolation, without an understanding of the underlying network.

This session will discuss how carriers can gain visibility into the not only the network, but also into the relationship between infrastructure and services. It will examine how to automatically correlate network performance with service quality in order to efficiently manage bandwidth and services while delivering robust and scalable IP Services.

The audience will learn the benefits of correlating the management of both the services and the underlying network, and specifically how to identify and understand the aspects of an MPLS Service, such as MPLS protocol interactions with BGP and to infer services such as RFC 254bis VPNs. This session will explore how this approach can be used to enable new IP services while reducing the cost of operations.
