Andrew Missing, Alcatel "The Emergence of a Multiprotocol Core"

Abstract:

As core products, features, networks and standards evolve, the dividing line between 'routing switches' and 'switch routers' becomes increasingly blurry -- with MPLS playing a key role for both categories. Differentiation between them now lies primarily in their migration path -- the sequence in which they enable capture of service revenues. This presentation will tackle the challenge facing established service providers in forecasting the service mix and growth rates - ie. the rate of adoption - and making a network investment decision to address them. Issues addressed include the use of MPLS traffic engineering to optimize IP networks, optical transmission integration with G.MPLS, and continuity and growth of existing services plus creation and provisioning of new advanced services. The presentation will then focus on the impact of this service evolution on current multiservice WAN deployments by investigating the key market, business case and technical issues driving the emergence of a multiprotocol core.
