Photonic Internet Laboratory: New challenges for future photonic network

The Photonic Internet Lab. (PIL) was founded last Autumn by 7 venders and a service provider for realizing new photonic network control protocols based on photonic technologies for managed networks. The Japanese government is supporting PIL and there will be a close association with ISOCORE.

PIL has two activity streams; one is advanced code testing for optimizing new GMPLS protocols. The other is standardization efforts with running code. This paper details the PIL efforts related to GMPLS testing and standardization.

In addition, PIL has successfully demonstrated Multi-layer(Multi-area), Multi-vender Multi-route GMPLS operation.

This paper also shows experimental results. Next, we have a plan to conduct national wide GMPLS multi-vender, multi-area trials. An introduction to these trials may be presented at MPLS 2003.

Finally, this paper describes how PIL intends to realize the future photonic Internet.
