L2-MPLS Networks

High quality and low cost IP backbone is necessary, since the population of broadband users such as ADSL and FTTH increase rapidly. NTT communications started deployment of nation-wide layer 2 - MPLS network since 2001 and finished this year (2003). The network consist of core and edge LSR (Label Switching Router) and DWDM system. The core LSR role is to transfer large amount of traffic and to provide reliability using LSP protection. The edge LSR provides variety of service interface such as Ethernet, POS, ATM, etc. L2-MPLS is considered as a new transport layer network and provides LSP's with Ethernet interface. Compare to the STM path, LSP is relatively soft and flexible. And statistical multiplexing can efficiently share the trunk link, therefore the cost of LSP can be reduced. The L2-MPLS network can provide variety of QoS such as CBR, CBR+, UBR and CBR-rt classes. New services such as wide area Ethernet service, VoIP and Hotspot use LSP as backbone path of their own service network instead of STM path. This presentation will show basic concept of L2-MPLS network and provide technical issue such as QoS, LSP protection and link down information transfer at Ethernet interface. And finally, shows future plan of L2-MPLS network.
