Multicast issues

Matthew Finlayson, Data Connection

Now that many Service Providers have deployed MPLS VPNs, they are looking to deliver more solutions over the technology (either by converging existing services using paralllel networks or by deploying new ones). Multicast services (such as Video on Demand, Video Broadcasting and Live Video Services) are an area where MPLS cannot currently meet the technical and business requirements of both Service Providers and Enterprises. A number of vendors have now proposed conflicting technical solutions to extend MPLS to meet these requirements.

This presentation will look at the conflicting technologies that offer to extend MPLS and MPLS VPNs to provide multicast services, and will provide an introduction to the technology, together with an overview of the benefits (both commercial and practical) of each to service providers and enterprises looking to deploy services over MPLS based networks.
