VPLS: A Case Study

Henry Yu
Time Warner Telecom

The presentation will briefly describe the intra-metro service offering, why it is popular with enterprises, and the technical and operational difficulties we foresaw extending it to span metro regions. It will then describe our evaluation of VPLS, including both the practicality of deploying it inter-metro, and the criteria we used to determine whether the result would satisfy the needs of our customers.

The presentation will go on to describe the functional requirements we had for VPLS and the methodology we used to test them. It will discuss the issues we ran into, and some of the operational aspects of deploying and running a wide-area VPLS service. Then, it will describe our customers' reactions to the service, and how well it met their needs. The presentation will conclude with our evaluation of VPLS, where we see this technology going, applications for this technology, and what further extensions are required for its broader success.
