Dr. Masatoshi Suzuki received his B.E. and Ph.D. degrees in electronics engineering from Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, in 1979 and 1984, respectively. In 1984, he joined KDD (currently KDDI), Tokyo, Japan. Since 1984, he has been engaged in research on high-speed optical devices, soliton transmission, WDM undersea cable systems and optical network. Currently, he is the Executive Director of KDDI R&D Laboratories, Inc. He received the distinguished paper award and the achievement award from IEICE in 1995 and 2004, respectively. He also received the best paper awards from OEC 1988 and OECC 2000. He was an Associate Editor of IEEE Journal of Lightwave Technologies from 1999 to 2004. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and a Member of IEICE.
